Welcome!

Hello, my name is Joe, and I'm a plant geek. I've started this blog as a tribute to those plants that make you stop and go, "Hmm..." If there's ever been a plant that jumped out at you and made you think about it, if only for a moment; this is the blog for you! What I intend to do is to profile those plants that we tend to notice, even if only for a moment. Each plant profile will include pictures, proper identification, basic cultural needs, and any other pertinent information. Trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, foliage plants, weeds, wildflowers, bulbs, succulents; they're all fair subject matter.

My initial geographic focus for Drive-by Horticulture will be my home, the Piedmont region of North Carolina. In a few weeks, I'll open up Drive-by Horticulture to user submissions. See a plant in a neighbor's yard, but don't know what it is? Send me an email and I'll do my best to identify and write a profile on it. Stay tuned for details about how to submit your photos.

Oh, and if you're wondering why there's a picture of a pineapple up there, it's because that particular fruit is an international and timeless symbol of welcome. Hope it made you feel right at home! Here's a link or two about the symbolism behind the pointy fruiting body. It's actually quite the interesting read.
